AANE Special Event 12/7: Parenting Girls on the Autism Spectrum, with Author Eileen Riley-Hall

From AANE.org
Asperger's Association of New England

Dear Parents,

Parenting our girls presents its own set of unique challenges. A number of parents of girls have reached out to us at AANE and requested more support. We've listened and are pleased to present a special event, Parenting Girls on the Autism Spectrum: Overcoming the Challenges and Celebrating the Gifts, on Saturday, Dec. 7, at AANE in Watertown.

This event will feature a talk with author, mother and teacher, Eileen Riley-Hall, a table of resources for girls and their families, and an opportunity for all of us to meet and talk.

About Eileen and Her Book

"If you have a daughter with autism or Asperger's syndrome, this book will be your primary source of information and inspiration as well as becoming your 'best friend' who understands and supports you."
--Tony Attwood

When I read her book I was comforted and informed by her words. She is practical, insightful, and understanding. I have returned to her book for inspiration and hope on the days when I've felt discouraged.

Here are a couple of her gems:

"One of the coolest things about having a daughter on the spectrum is that she will never be a replica of any other image, brand name or social stereotype. Whatever she does, she will do it her way, with her distinctive brand of quirkiness."

"The best thing is to expect the unexpected. The moment you think you have it under control, you're toast. We have all made bizarre accommodations to appease our kids; we just don't admit it. Don't worry; you are not a pushover, just a human being. Craziness is part of the job description of being a special parent. It's okay; remember the rest of us are crazy too. If you are going to survive, you have to learn to laugh loudly and often. Seeing the humor in life is the only way to make it through and have some fun along the way."

This is the only Girls event we have scheduled this year. Please don't miss out on this unique opportunity to come together as a community and focus on our daughters!
