On November 14, 2013, the Trauma and Learning Policy Initiative (TLPI) officially released Helping Traumatized Children Learn, Volume 2 at an event hosted by the Mary E. Baker Elementary School in Brockton, MA. We are pleased to share the following videos from the event on our website.

Watch Sal Terrasi's video

Dr. Sal Terrasi, Director of Pupil Personnel Services for Brockton Public Schools, spoke about Brockton’s work to create trauma-sensitive learning environments for students. Drawing a parallel with the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Terrasi views current efforts to make schools trauma sensitive as stemming from the same impetus that drove desegregation: a desire to create the best learning environments for children.

Watch Ryan Power's video

Ryan Powers, Principal of the Mary E. Baker Elementary School in Brockton, MA, discusses the importance of focusing in a trauma-sensitive way on the social and emotional well-being of all students. Principal Powers discusses Helping Traumatized Children Learn, Volume 1 (the “Purple Book”), which creates awareness of the impact of trauma on learning at school. He explains how Volume 2 (the “Teal Book”) details steps schools can take to improve academic achievement by educating the whole child in a trauma-sensitive way.
