The data for students with disabilities reported on these state profiles represent those students found eligible to receive special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Student Enrollment, Ages 6 Through 21

Percent of Population Who Are Children With Disabilities (IDEA), Ages 3 Through 21
State percent for 3 years (2009, 2010, 2011) compared to nation for 2011; displayed separately for children ages 3–5 and 6–21
Percent of Children With Disabilities (IDEA) by Disability Category, Ages 6 Through 21
Percent of overall student enrollment identified under each of IDEA’s disability categories in state compared to nationwide percent
Percent of Children With Disabilities by Disability Category, Ages 3 Through 21

Four-Year Regulatory Adjusted Cohort Graduation Rate
Percentage of students from the original cohort (9th grade) who graduated in four years with a regular high school diploma for all students in the state and students with disabilities. See also Diplomas at Risk for an explanation of the Four‐Year Regulatory Adjusted Cohort Graduation Rate.
Educational Environments, Ages 3 Through 5
Percentage of children with disabilities in the state and nation by disability category attending a regular early childhood program, or a separate special education class, separate school, or residential facility.
Educational Environments, Ages 6 Through 21
Percent of Time Spent Inside the Regular Classroom by disability category, state and nation (Regular classroom, separate, residential categories). Note: Frequently referred to as “least restrictive environment.”
Participation of Children With Disabilities (IDEA) in Statewide Assessments
Percentage of children with disabilities who participated in statewide assessments for reading and mathematics for 4th grade, 8th grade, and one grade in high school–general assessment, alternate assessment, non‐participants
Performance on Statewide Assessments
Percentage of all students in the state who scored at or above proficient on the regular assessment and percent of children with disabilities who scored at or above proficient on the regular assessment and alternate assessment in 4th grade, 8th grade, and high school.
Performance on 2011 NAEP Assessments
Percentage of students in the state who scored at or above the Basic level and at or above the Proficient level on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), for children with disabilities (IDEA) and children without disabilities in reading and mathematics at grades 4 and 8
Exclusion Rates for 2011 NAEP Assessments
Percentage of students identified as having a disability who were excluded from the NAEP assessment in the state and nation in reading and mathematics at grades 4 and 8
Note about NAEP: NAEP is administered to a representative sample of students in the state. Results are regarded to generalize to the student population. However, high exclusion rates for students with disabilities in many states make results for this group unreliable.

Post School Outcomes
Percent of youth who are no longer in secondary school, had IEPs in effect at the time they left school and were (1) enrolled in higher ed within one year, (2) enrolled higher education or competitively employed, and (3) enrolled in higher education or in some other postsecondary education or training program; or competitively employed or in some other employment within one year of leaving high school
