Safe and Supportive Schools Presentation at Newton North High School Wednesday, October 8th

From the Newton SEPAC and
Massachusetts Advocates for Children

October 4, 2014

The Newton Parent Advisory Council for Special Education, and the Trauma and Learning Policy Initiative, a collaboration of Massachusetts Advocates for Children and Harvard Law School, invite local and neighboring community parents, educators and other interested persons to a free presentation on the Safe and Supportive Schools Framework, incorporated into a law enacted by the Commonwealth’s legislature in August.

Joe Ristuccia of the Trauma and Learning Policy Initiative, author, School Psychologist and Adjunct Professor at Lesley University, will discuss how exposure to adverse childhood experiences can have a neurobiological and psychological impact on children that can undermine their ability to learn, form relationships, and self-regulate their behavior in the classroom and community.

Ristuccia will also discuss how the new Safe and Supportive Schools Framework guides schools in creating the school-wide infrastructure needed to provide a safe and supportive, trauma-sensitive learning environment that is responsive to the needs of all students. Using the Framework, schools can align the many initiatives that lay the foundation for a safe and supportive school.

The program will be introduced by our local State Representative Ruth Balser, one of the lead sponsors of the recently passed legislation. Following the presentation there will be an open discussion.

When:   7:00 – 9:00pm Wednesday, October 8, 2014

Where: Newton North High School Auditorium
                 457 Walnut Street, Newton, MA
